Given his sensational performances last year, Brouwer has many points to defend in the city where he was born in 1996. He currently occupies 123rd place in the world rankings. The first round of elimination would have resulted in a free fall.

Brouwer faces a tough challenge in the next round. Then he takes fourth seed John Isner (ATP-46). The 37-year-old American was allowed to skip the first round due to his high ranking.

Brewer, 27, did not make it past the first round of qualifying in Miami last month. Number 3 in the Netherlands (behind Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Fransespoor) had to acknowledge his superiority over France’s Benoît Paire with a score of 6-3, 6-4.
