At least 47 people have died in Tanzania due to heavy floods and landslides. Local authorities reported that 80 people were also injured.
This happened in the north of the East African country, near Mount Hanang. Homes and infrastructure were severely damaged due to the bad weather. President Hassan deployed the army to assist in rescue efforts.

Tanzania is regularly affected by floods: tens of thousands of people are exposed to them every year. The East African region has been hit hard several times this year by floods and mudslides linked to the El Niño climate phenomenon. Hundreds of thousands of people have been displaced in Kenya, Tanzania and Somalia.

Last month, heavy rains in Tanzania also caused deaths in Dar es Salaam city and Kigoma, Kagera, Geta and Unguja districts. Homes were damaged and crops were swept away. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority warned of continued heavy rains this month.
