Disney Entertainment Group will court Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. According to Disney, DeSantis and other state politicians imposed all kinds of measures on the company in retaliation. It started when Disney spoke out against a law banning teachers from speaking about sexual orientation. The company says these reprisals also warrant a violation of Disney’s right to free speech.
When DeSantis passed the law, dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” law, Disney initially did nothing. The company was criticized for this, after which former CEO Bob Chapek stated that Disney was behind the LGBTI community. Then DeSantis decided that the Reedy Creek improvement area needed to be addressed. That private municipality, then under Disney’s control, gave the entertainment group the opportunity to arrange such matters as police, firefighters, road maintenance, and development plans for the area in which the Disney World theme park is located.
That special situation disappeared, but shortly before that happened, Disney-appointed directors limited the ability of the DeSantis-loyal board of directors to shake things up. Thus, the development and construction policy was deposited with Disney almost forever. The new board has reversed those decisions, but it remains unclear whether it can be done in this manner. DeSantis also threatened to build a prison at Disney World and transfer control of Disney theme parks to the state of Florida. Other theme parks still have to be allowed to do it themselves.
DeSantis is seen as an important candidate to run for the presidency of the United States on behalf of the Republicans. Officially, he has not yet announced his desire to run for this position.
