In his new position, he will focus entirely on research and teaching in the field of international law in relation to sustainability and bringing together interdisciplinary research at the UvA. It will focus primarily on the regime shift needed to limit climate change and cross planetary boundaries, and on the contribution of international law to this.

States, international organizations, national and multinational companies and consumers have contributed to climate change around the world, but this has been facilitated by international (public) law. This same right is now indispensable to help solve the climate crisis. Nollkaemper will contribute to this as a university professor.

Service status

Nollkaemper has a strong track record in international law. Outside of his deanship, he was an external advisor on international law at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was also President of the European Society of International Law, a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and the Institute of International Law. Since 2022, he has led the UvA Sustainability Platform.

In addition to André Nollkemper, the university has seven other university professors. They are Tobias Blank, Nathalie Hilberger, Ivana Eschjom, Rijk van der Ploeg, Martin de Rieke, Patti Valkenborg and Claes de Vries. It is not yet known who will succeed Nollkemper as dean of the Faculty of Law.
