Breakdancing is not in the 2028 Games: “We want to create icons like Sven and Epke” | Other sports
Breakdancing won’t make its Olympic debut until next year, but it’s already certain that the sport won’t be in Los Angeles in 2028. This decision hurts the Dutch breakers. “Break dancing originated in America, after all.”
Het was niet echt meer een verrassing, maar toch deed het Paul van Dal pijn toen hij vorige week definitief hoorde dat breakdance de olympische status na 2024 meteen weer kwijtraakt.
“Het is heel bizar en zuur dat er ongeacht het succes of het debacle van Parijs al een keuze wordt gemaakt”, zegt de technisch directeur van de Nederlandse breakers tegen NU.nl. “Je wil gevoelsmatig aan iets bouwen, dat ook voor langere termijn houdbaar is. We worden steeds professioneler als sport, maar de vraag is hoe dat eruit gaat zien als we niet meer olympisch zijn.”
Dat breakdance uitgerekend in Los Angeles niet op het programma is enigszins opvallend. De dansstijl is in de jaren zeventig ontstaan in de achterstandswijken van New York en groeide uit tot een subcultuur in de Verenigde Staten. “Breakdance is nota bene in Amerika ontstaan. Dus iedereen had verwacht dat we ook in de VS op het allerhoogste podium zouden staan. Maar dat mooie verhaal gaan we helaas niet schrijven.”
Breakdance maakte deel uit van een lijst met negen sporten die hoopten op een olympische status in LA. Maandag besloten de IOC-leden in Mumbai dat cricket, honkbal/softbal, flag football, lacrosse en squash olympisch worden in 2028. Naast breaking vielen ook karate, kickboksen en motorsport af. “Het gaat bij de Spelen niet alleen om een verhaal, maar ook om de belangen”, zegt Van Dal.
“We wisten dat er grote Amerikaanse sporten op die lijst stonden en dan ga je al nadenken over wat die sporten wereldwijd teweegbrengen. Het feit dat cricket wordt toegevoegd, zorgt natuurlijk voor een hele nieuwe doelgroep uit India. Daar gaan grote deals mee gepaard. Het gaat om miljoenen of zelfs miljarden en daar kan de werelddansfederatie niet tegenop”, zegt Van Dal.

The Netherlands is one of the contenders for the Medal of Honor in Paris along with seventeen-year-old world champion India Sardjoy. Three-time world champion Menno van Gorp (34) and 22-year-old Lee Le Dimeyer have a chance to medal among the men, but have yet to qualify for the Games.
“My goal was to make India and Minno as big icons as Sven Kramer and Epeke Sonderland,” says Van Daal. “But that has become more difficult now.”
The former break dancer hopes his sport will get a second chance in 2032 at the Brisbane Olympics. He added, “We hear in the halls that the organizing committee of the Brisbane Championships is very enthusiastic about break sports. So after Paris we will build a more professional sport. Although we still have to do something in the International Dance Federation.”
Breakdancing does not have its own international association, but is represented by the World Dance Sports Federation (WDSF). This federation has extensive experience in the field of ballroom dancing and has been organizing major breakdancing championships only since 2019.
“The FIFA has no background in break sport, but it is responsible for the Olympic organisation,” says Van Daal. “It’s actually not a problem that we now have more time in the back to organize things properly in the association. Maybe we can even create our own international break dancing association.”
