Je grijpt misschien sneller naar een pijnstiller dan je collega. Bij de drogist, apotheek of de supermarkt kun je allerlei pillen kopen. Paracetamol en ibuprofen zijn daarvan de bekendste.
Maar waar je partner dagenlang blijft rondlopen met hoofdpijn, denk jij: ik pak er een pil bij. Hoe komt dat? “Dat heeft te maken met je pijngrens”, zegt Annemieke Horikx van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Maatschappij ter bevordering der Pharmacie (KNMP). “De een kan nou eenmaal meer verdragen dan de ander.”
Ook de tijd waarin we leven speelt mee, weet Horikx. “Tegenwoordig bestaat er voor bijna iedere kwaal wel een geneesmiddel of pijnstiller. Het wordt niet meer geaccepteerd als je thuisblijft van werk, als je alleen knallende hoofdpijn hebt.”
“Ibuprofen remt de aanmaak van stoffen die een ontstekingsreactie opwekken”, zegt Anke Lambooij van het Instituut voor Verantwoord Medicijngebruik. Bij een ontstekingsreactie kun je denken aan koorts, roodheid, zwelling en pijn.
“Van paracetamol weten we niet precies hoe het werkt. Het middel is in ieder geval minder ontstekingsremmend dan ibuprofen. En het lijkt zo te zijn dat het de pijnprikkels naar je hersenen weet om te leiden.”

- Zit je in een ruimte waar de airco aan staat of waar weinig frisse lucht binnenkomt: ga dan af en toe even naar buiten.

You can get used to the pain
Lamboy advises tracking how often you get headaches and how often you take a pain reliever. In addition, taking pain medications for a long time can also make some of the damage in your body stronger, because you no longer feel the pain as clearly or have become accustomed to it. But it also depends on the cause of the pain, Horex knows.
“If you have rheumatism or osteoarthritis, it can also be very bad to sit still all day. A painkiller can make it easier for you to move, but it can also damage your body by moving too much where you actually want to be.” “He should take some rest.” According to her, it can sometimes be difficult to decide whether to take painkillers or not.
You don’t have pain for nothing
Horikx would like to caution against taking too much ibuprofen for a long period of time. This can be harmful to your stomach. Ibuprofen can damage that layer, causing heartburn or other stomach complaints.
“So people who are older or have stomach problems are advised to take antacids in addition to ibuprofen.” What is too much and too long depends on the person. “For some, it’s after a few days, for others after weeks or months.”
Besides headaches, there are no other lasting pains caused by taking painkillers, Horricks says. However, she says you should always make sure you know why you’re taking something, and especially: for how long. “If you don’t know that, you might ignore certain signals. After all, you’re not feeling pain for nothing.”
