Arantxa Rus again failed to secure a place in the second round of the US Open. American Shelby Rogers, who is 31st in his country, was 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 too strong for the best tennis player in the Netherlands.
For the 31-year-old Russian, the 95th in the world, this was already the 10th consecutive defeat in the opening round of one of the Grand Slams. The last time she won a major tournament match was at the Australian Open more than two and a half years ago.
Ross claimed a stunt for a group and a half against Rogers. She never gave up her serve until 6-3 3-4, but a break in the eighth inning of the second set was fatal. Rogers, who was still a quarterfinalist in New York two years ago, began producing more and more winners and increasingly imposed her will on Ross. Two hours and 13 minutes later, the American audience was cheering in the fifth lane.
Only in 2011 did Ross manage to survive the first round in New York. She beat Russian Yelena Vesnina eleven years ago.
In the lead-up to the year’s last major tournament, Ross did not play any tournaments on American soil. She chose the ITF tournaments in Spain, where she currently lives. On the other hand, Rogers reached the final in the WTA Tour Championships in San Jose.
