Thirteen women and girls were killed in northern India after falling into a deep well. Local Police Chief Akhil Kumar said the tragic incident occurred during a wedding party in Kushinagar town.
Kumar said the victims sat on an iron plate that was covering the well when it broke. The fifty-foot-deep pit was old and could not bear the weight of women and girls. After their fall they were crushed under the rubble. Two others were also seriously injured in the drama.
The guests of the ceremony immediately transported the victims to the hospital. There, 11 women were declared dead immediately, and two more died of their injuries shortly thereafter. Television footage shows relatives in hospital mourning their loved ones, while they were still dressed in their wedding attire, reports the Indian channel. NDTV.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and described the incident as “heartbreaking”.
