A major highway on the east coast of the United States, connecting major cities such as Miami, Washington, Philadelphia and New York, is expected to be paralyzed for weeks after a section of the highway in the US state of Pennsylvania became passable.

A burning tanker truck has collapsed part of busy I-95 in Philadelphia and crashed into a low road. The road is part of the important north-south axis, which runs from southern Florida to near the northern United States border with Canada.

“This is a major route for people and goods and the closure will have a significant impact on the city and region until reconstruction is complete,” US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg wrote on Twitter.

Explosions

Pictures from local television stations show a fine black cloud of smoke. Residents told local media that they heard several explosions, but there were no reports of injuries so far. The fire is now under control.

White House spokeswoman Karen Jean-Pierre said US President Joe Biden has learned of the situation and his teams are in contact with local authorities to provide assistance.
