American and vaccinated? Then you are welcome to Europe this summer

This was said by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, yesterday in an interview with The New York Times.

Free movement

“As far as I can judge, Americans only use vaccines that have been approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA),” von der Leyen explained. “Therefore, all European Union member states will allow entry to travelers who have been vaccinated.”

The president affirms that there will be “free movement of people between the United States and the European Union.” It does not say exactly when this will start. You have only stated that vaccinated tourists are welcome again “this summer”.

It is also not clear what kind of vaccination certificate travelers should be able to present. This is currently under discussion at a high level.

Group immunity mid-June

In the interview with the newspaper, the president continues that vaccination in the United States is going well. The country will likely achieve group immunity in mid-June, when about 70 percent of adults will have had an injection.

In the United States, vaccinations are done with the vaccines Moderna, Pfizer, and Janssen. All of these vaccines are also approved by the EMA.
