Patty Jenkins Not in any way satisfied with Warner Bros.’ decision. to me Wonderful Woman 1984 simultaneously in theaters and on streaming service HBO Max.

The film was originally scheduled to be released in theaters in June 2020, but like many other productions, the film has been severely delayed due to the coronavirus. After two late releases, the movie finally appeared in the 2020 Christmas season.

Hybrid release

Wonderful Woman 1984 It was simultaneously released in theaters and on the streaming service HBO Max. Given the number of cinemas closed, the film had a reasonable opening weekend with $16.7 million in the United States. It was even the best opening for a movie during the pandemic at the time.

However, the simultaneous release of the film on HBO Max took a toll on the box office. Film output grossed $46 million in the United States and $166 million in foreign theaters. A big setback for Jenkins, who seems to be outspoken against the hybrid versions:

“It was the best of a bunch of bad choices at the time, but it was a heartbreaking experience. It was bad for the movie. I don’t think the experience is the same on broadcast. Never not. I’m not a fan of the hybrid versions and always hope to avoid them.”
