Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko didn’t make himself famous in South America and Mexico. The Austrian spoke about Sergio Perez earlier this week, and those words didn’t go down well on the other side of the world. Marco has even been accused of discrimination, which group counsel says he didn’t say.
Marco spoke about Sergio Perez earlier this week. In a program on Austrian television channel Servus TV, team advisor Red Bull Racing driver Perez spoke about his performance. Marco was pleased with his performance at Monza, but added that Perez was not as focused as Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. Perez was also ‘South American’, said the Austrian in a rather clumsy manner.
The reports did not cause a stir in Europe, but the reaction in Mexico and South America was particularly severe. Mexico was not even in South America and Marco was also accused of discrimination. In a conversation with OE24, Marco apologizes: “I didn’t say that. I said that a Mexican has a different mentality than a Dutchman or a German. But who knows, maybe he has everything under control.”
