The much-discussed new BarbieA movie starring Margot Robbie resulted in a lack of bright pink paint, says the production designer responsible for it. It’s unclear how severe the shortage was, but in any case, large quantities were needed to get everything in pink. The challenge was: how pink?
“It was necessary to preserve the childishness,” says director Greta Gerwig of her film Against the Trade Magazine. architectural digest. The movie is for adults, but it has to convey “what made me love Barbie when I was a little girl,” says Gerwig. “I wanted the pink to be really bright and just about everything too much Will be.”
The shooting mainly took place on sets that had been built specifically for the film and therefore had to be painted pink. That triggered the neon fluorescent pink paint job, according to production designer Sarah Greenwood. “The world is out of pink,” she laughs. This seems excessive, but it’s not entirely out of the question: according to Greenwood, paint has been at the core of her work.
I asked earlier “what is pink?” IndieWire. She pointed to a glass of grapefruit juice, which is pink in some light but more beige in other light. The designer began working with illustrators to mix all kinds of shades of pink, from almost purple to beige. “We had over 100 shades of pink,” Greenwood said.
She eventually narrowed it down to about a dozen shades used in the film, such as the three-story Barbie house that was built in a London studio for the film. “When we asked, the company didn’t have enough pigment,” she said, referring to the way the paint is tinted. “Everyone was trying to find more.”

Barbie never gets sexy
Part of the movie’s “childish” atmosphere is that Barbie isn’t sexy. “She’s a plastic doll. She has neither organs nor genitals. If she doesn’t, does she feel sexual desires? No, I don’t think so,” Margot Robbie said recently. Vogue magazine. In other words: People can think something sexual about Barbie, but: “She should never be sexy.” Yes, she can wear a miniskirt, but only because it’s fun and pink. Not because she wanted to see her ass.”
The movie won’t be out until July 21, but it’s been dominating social media for months now. This is partly due to what appears to be a perfect casting for Robbie (Barbie) and Ryan Gosling (Ken), who are as close to the doll couple as possible. Think, for example, of Margot’s weak foot in one of the trailers.
Chrissy Teigen, who used to be a model, couldn’t believe her eyes. “I want to know everything about this shot,” she tweeted, which received 228,000 likes. How long did it take, was she holding on to something, was she dangling from something, was the floor sticky, was it her feet, and who did the pedicure? I actually want a documentary about this scene.
