American golfer Scottie Scheffler wins the Players Championship and returns to No. 1 in the world rankings. The 26-year-old Scheffler was the best at the prestigious tournament in Ponte Vedra Beach (Florida). The American won by five strokes, five strokes ahead of the Englishman Terrell Hatton.
Scheffler took the number one spot in the world rankings from John Rahm. The Spaniard withdrew from the second round of the Players Championship, which is considered golf’s fifth major tournament, on Friday due to illness. The award amounted to 25 million dollars (converted to 23.5 million euros), of which 4.5 million went to Scheffler. The American finished after the final round of 69 strikeouts on a total of 271. Hutton finished with 276 strikeouts.
Scheffler and Ram have taken turns at the top of the world rankings in recent weeks. The American also recently won the Phoenix Open. He will defend his title in the Masters tournament early next month. Scheffler is the third player after golf icons Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods to simultaneously call himself the reigning Masters champion and “The Players”.
