In 2026, Rotterdam will host the World Gymnastics Championships in Ahoy for the third time. The International Gymnastics Federation FIG has designated this event for the coastal city. Rotterdam also hosted the World Championships in Gymnastics in 1987 and 2010.

Kristen Eskes, a member of the Rotterdam Sports House, announced at the end of last year that her city had applied. During a board meeting in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, FIFA awarded the World Cup to Rotterdam. The municipality contributes a maximum of 1.35 million euros to the organization.

This year the gymnasts will go to the English city of Liverpool for the World Championships, and next year the event will be held in Antwerp. The World Championships will be held in Rotterdam from 17-25 October 2026 at the Ahoy Sports Palace.

“We are very proud and proud to welcome the World Cup,” said Monique Kempf, president of the Dutch Gymnastics Association KNGU, who performed in Rotterdam with Essex and former gymnast Ipeke Zunderland in Dubrovnik. As the fourth sport in the Netherlands, we have set ourselves the goal of making sport more and better for people. Emphasizing the importance of sport and exercise is the common denominator in many of the initiatives we take as the National Trade Union Confederation. In this way we put sport back on the map and open up the world once again to our beautiful sport. This World Cup is a unique point on the horizon.”

Three-time world champion Zonderland, the Olympic gold medalist on the horizontal bar at the London 2012 Games, called it an “honour” that the Netherlands could stage the World Cup again. It is great for the advancement of sports and sports participation in our country. What could be better than showing how amazing gymnastics is on the larger international stage? The gold went to the Chinese Zhang Chenglong, and Zonderland had to settle for silver. Frisi ended his rich career at the Tokyo Olympics last year.
