Sharapova pulls out of US Open

Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the final Grand Slam of the year after failing to recover from a leg injury that has kept her out of competition since Wimbledon. It is a rather hefty blow to the tournament – and her legions of fans.

The 2006 champion took to Facebook to break the news on the eve of the tournament, saying, “Unfortunately, I will not be able to compete in this year’s US Open. I have done everything possible to be ready, but it was just not enough time. To all my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong.”

Sharapova will be replaced in the draw by a lucky loser, her fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina.
