Edinburgh powered past Italian club Treviso in their Guinness Pro 12 encounter at the hallowed Murrayfield this weekend, but the 48-0 shellacking was marred by wild brawl that spilled over the sideline.
Sparked by a grubby series of punches to a prone Edinburgh player in a ruck by Treviso flanker Romelu Acosta, the fuming Scots poured in to seek retribution, attacking the offender and pushing him into the advertising hoardings.
Acosta was deservedly shown a red card, while Edinburgh’s Grayson Hart was sin-binned for his role in the fight’s escalation.
If the NRL’s ‘no-punching’ edict had been in place in the European rugby competition there would have been on a handful of players left on the paddock. Nevertheless, the referee should be commended for the way he handled the ugly incident.
