Rugby HQ Top 5 schoolboy prodigies

Following the Queensland Reds’ capture of standout New Zealand schoolboy Taniela Tupou, dubbed the ‘Tongan Thor’, the guys at Rugby HQ have dedicated this week’s Top 5 to the best-ever schoolboy prodigies.

The 18-year-old prop Tupou, who shot to prominence after video surfaced of his rampaging long-range tries for Auckland’s Sacred Heart College First XV, has shunned the opportunity to become an All Black in favour of a future Wallabies call-up.

The young giant will be endeavouring to follow in the footsteps of South African flyhalf Johan Goosen, barnstorming Samoan-cum-English outside back Manu Tuilagi, Wallabies livewire Kurtley Beale, All Blacks wing superstar Julian Savea, and Australia’s incomparable Ella brothers, Mark, Gary and Glen.

The players featured in Rugby HQ’s Top 5 all went to achieve international honours after showing outrageous promise as schoolboys, and this clip features some brilliant footage of them carving up their hapless junior opponents.

But if Tupou’s First XV heroics are anything to go by, Test rugby is on the horizon for the Reds’ newest acquisition.
