My childhood, and the childhood of every other NFL fan, took a major hit today with Steve Smith announcing that he would be retiring after this season.

The Ravens were eliminated from playoff contention last Sunday with their loss to the Steelers, so their season will end after their Week 17 game.

The former Panthers receiver joined Baltimore two seasons ago after being let go in Carolina as the team’s all-time receptions, yards and touchdowns leader.

Smith was one of the more entertaining players in his time in the NFL, and coined many catchphrases and memorable moments, including his broken arm touchdown and his famous fights with top corners.
Steve Smith should retire as a Panther, with his last intended target a Jake Delhomme interception.

Smith will leave as one of the NFL’s all-time best receivers, and a sure Hall of Fame player. As a lifelong Panthers fan, losing Smith is a big blow to my childhood. We’ll miss you, Smitty!
