After a year’s absence, the Formula 1 Circus will take place on US soil this weekend. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff can’t wait to see the enthusiastic American fans. In addition, he expects the race to be full of entertainment once again.
“We are very happy to be back in Austin,” said Wolff. “COTA is a lot of fun for the drivers, there are fast corners and a very technical part, plus the circuit also has good overtaking opportunities,” admits the Mercedes team principal. By winning in America, the German squad will achieve three consecutive victories. With that they will deal a huge blow to title contender Red Bull Racing.
Turkey
The Austrian looks at the excellent performance in Russia and Turkey. “In Istanbul, Valtteri Bottas were very dominant in treacherous conditions. For Lewis Hamilton, it was mainly about damage reduction,” says Wolff. The Mercedes boss is vague about compromising with Hamilton’s pit stop: “When you’re in the race you always want to have a spot on the track to score more points. That’s what we are as racers and we wouldn’t get it any other way.”
Creators Championship
Bottas’ win was also good for the constructors’ championship. “It was a huge boost for Bottas himself. He also helped the team in the fight for the constructors’ title, and we now have even more progress,” concludes Wolff. The track in the United States should fit the German racing stable better. Mercedes has won five times in the past six years.
