Flemish journalist Martin Heilen can be seen from Tuesday with an eight-part documentary series Uncle Martin In Belgium one. He goes on a road trip across America in search of his family, who left a hundred years ago on a Red Star Line ferry.
Martin’s father, Henry, was raised as an American on a farm in Michigan. Unfortunately, the adventure ended after eight years and the family returned. They lived in Ostieglo, but Martin’s father was attracted to America. His stories of adventures and wildlife in Michigan made Martin a world-traveling adventurer. Now Martin has discovered a great unknown branch of the family in America.
He travels to Michigan to visit his new relatives. But those encounters turn out to be more emotional than expected. Martin is also swept up in a world of yellow school buses and guns. As he begins to follow the old path of his father and grandparents who immigrated to America like hundreds of thousands of Flemish fortune seekers, more surprises emerge.
Document series Uncle Martin Watch Belgium One every week from Tuesday 27th September at 8.35pm. Read here which Belgium One channels you can watch with your TV provider.
