After defeating Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of the US Open, she appears to have a few leftovers, but the tennis world – and perhaps herself too – is assuming 40-year-old Serena Williams will play one last time. Singles level match up.

At the end of the last century, the American showed herself for the first time in the wake of her slightly older sister Venus. It turned out to be the start of an amazing career in which she developed into a true tennis icon, and an example to many both inside and outside the sport.

Below, as an estimate, a brief overview in photos of mainly Grand Slam successes. She amassed a total of 23 Grand Slam titles, the first as a rising star just 17 years ago (US Open 1999) and the last as a 35-year-old star (Australian Open 2017):
