This afternoon, Hancock said, “We detected again two cases of a new variant here in the UK.” “This new variant is very worrying, because it appears to be more mutated than the first variable that was discovered in our country and can be transferred more quickly.”
According to Hancock, South Africa has been very helpful in sharing information about the formation of coronavirus variants in that country, so new cases can be recognized quickly. They are detected in a routine, depending on local, virus samples where virus samples are analyzed selectively. Since one case was found in London and one in the northwest, and because there are many daily flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg to England, it is possible that this type of Coronavirus has now also become more prevalent.
Susan Hopkins of the government’s Public Health Agency also reported that the new variant is “very different from common in South Africa” and “highly contagious”. She argues that there is no indication that vaccines that have already been developed will not help in facing the new variants. “There is strong evidence that they will work.”
Hancock reported that the two infected people have been quarantined. This also applies to people they have been in contact with. The British minister stated that there would be immediate restrictions on traffic from South Africa. Later in the evening, it was announced that the country would shut down all air traffic with South Africa from 9.00 a.m. Thursday. Anyone who has visited this country in the past two weeks should also be placed in quarantine.
