After previous rumors about the arrival of a new, cutting-edge Qualcomm chip, the manufacturer announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. According to Qualcomm, the first smartphones with the new Qualcomm soc should hit stores at the end of this year.
In the run-up to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, the company posted an announcement of the Snapdragon Gen 2 online and has since gone offline again. Meanwhile, the Full spec list leaked Which leads to flow later this day.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is the successor to Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 and is again 4nm soc. The Kryo CPU core gets an upgrade to the Arm Cortex X3 core. In addition to the main core, the CPU has four performance cores and three efficiency cores. Qualcomm claims that the processor is 10 percent faster than its predecessor and 30 percent more efficient. Qualcomm even claims that the Adreno GPU is 25 percent faster than its predecessor and 40 percent more efficient.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 gets a new X70 5G modem and supports WiFi 7. The chip supports at least the 5GHz and 6GHz bands. 2.4GHz band support is not mentioned, but Qualcomm has not confirmed that support for that band will be dropped. The new soc supports up to 4200MHz LP-DDR5x working memory, which was LP-DDR5 up to 3200MHz with the previous generation. Just like its predecessor, the chip supports a maximum of 16GB of RAM.
For media, the specs generally remain the same as with the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. What’s notable is that Qualcomm supports the AV1 codec for the first time for video playback of 8K HDR images at 60fps.
Qualcomm has announced that Asus, Honor, Iqoo, Motorola Nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Redmagic, Redmi, Sharp, Sony, Vivo, Xiaomi Xingj/Meizu, and ZTE will use Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for their smartphones. A number of smartphone manufacturers will release their first device with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor this year.
