Former US Vice President Mike Pence is not being tried because of secret documents found in his home. The Justice Department confirmed, following news from CNN, among others, that the investigation into the politician had been closed.

The documents were found by Pence’s lawyer in January and turned over to the FBI. Pence stated that he was not aware that the documents were in his private home. Previously, classified documents were also found in the private properties of former President Donald Trump and current President Joe Biden. The investigation is still ongoing, according to CNN.

The decision came shortly before Pence announced his candidacy for the presidency on June 7, according to US media. He would then become a direct rival to Trump, as he was Vice President from 2017 to 2021. The two have worked closely together for many years.

However, after storming the Washington Capitol in early 2021, Pence has increasingly distanced himself from Trump. He said that by encouraging rioters to attack the Capitol, Trump put him and his family in danger. Pence testified against Trump in the case in April. The former president tried unsuccessfully to prevent Pence from testifying before the courts. Previous attempts to prevent testimony have also failed.
