The plank in Sakura Drop appears to be the cause of Matthew van der Poel’s crash. At least, that can be inferred from the words of Milan Feder, who warned Van der Poel over lunch. “It might be hard to say, but we’ve talked about this before.”

“He asked me why everyone jumped off the rocks, when you could also roll off of them. Then I told him they were going to remove those slabs. After all, they also did at the test event (which Van der Poel skipped at the last minute because of his full calendar, editor).”

“During the match, I heard conversations behind me,” he continues on we. “Then I knew it was a mistake. They usually put those boards there for safety during training sessions, but mountain biking is getting more and more extreme. Those jumps are part of that. I think he knew.”

Enjoy the special performance
Vader has enjoyed his own game, he says. “I loved it. Even though I was still hoping for a medal. I’m getting better at the game, I know in the coming years what my homework is. I’ve been working for this for eight years so I’m going to rest now for a while and then We’ll start working.”

During the race, Vader had a good start, still on the medal circuit for a while. “It was just as planned. This also allowed me to save more energy to stay off the beaten track. It’s hard to put a number in this race, but I enjoyed it and look forward to the next three years.”
