Mercedes expects a new deal with Hamilton within days

The Mercedes Formula 1 team hopes to extend the contract with Lewis Hamilton in a few days. “We’re still talking, but it will happen soon. Then we’re talking days, not weeks,” team boss Toto Wolff of the German racing team told CNBC.

The 38-year-old Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes expires at the end of this season. The seven-time world champion had already indicated at the end of last season that he wanted to stick around longer to win a historic eighth world title, but a new commitment has yet to be signed. Team boss Wolff said at the start of this season that drafting a new contract beyond 2023 was a formality. He said at the time: “Lewis is part of the team and the team is part of Lewis. There’s no reason not to go on together.”

“It would be nice if we could come to an agreement before Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix,” Wolff said on CNBC. “However, I do not commit to a date, otherwise I would keep getting questions. But we have such a good relationship that we are almost dreading the moment we have to talk about money.”
