Johnson & Johnson has to pay billions for the asbestos in baby powder
Johnson & Johnson Medical (J&J) has to pay a group of women $2.1 billion because baby powder from the US group is said to be a carcinogen. And this was decided by the Supreme Court of the United States after a lower court had previously ruled that the company should come with compensation.
It involved twenty women because the powder could have caused ovarian cancer because it contained asbestos. The amount J&J was originally required to pay was over $ 4 billion. But last year another judge confirmed that the amount of compensation had been cut dramatically. J&J may have to pay more compensation later to solve the problem. There are still thousands of lawsuits pending from people with complaints about baby powder.
J&J, which is now in the news mainly because of subsidiary Janssen’s coronavirus vaccine, has stopped selling the powder made from talc in the United States and Canada. The company stated that it was a commercial decision to sell only baby cornstarch powder in North America.
Due to the controversy surrounding talcum powder, the entire sale of baby powder has dropped sharply. About three-quarters of J&J baby powder sold in the United States and Canada is actually made with cornstarch. Outside North America, this ratio is reversed. There, talcum powder simply remained on the shelves.
