Increased cases of dengue fever in Curaçao

Willemstad – There is a significant increase in dengue cases in Curaçao. This is what the Ministry of Health reported. By the end of January, a total of 31 cases of dengue and one case of chikungunya had been confirmed. The increased demand for laboratory tests and the rise in dengue-like cases reported by general practitioners indicate that these diseases are widespread and beginning to spread. “Even big,” the ministry says.

The Ministry has started an information campaign on the prevention of dengue fever for the public on the prevention of dengue infection since November 2023. Dengue fever is currently spreading in several countries. The campaign included intensive controls to eliminate breeding places for mosquitoes that cause dengue fever.

Since January this year, there has been an increase in dengue cases across Curaçao, due to the lack of rain over the past four weeks. Severe illness, dengue deaths, and hospitalizations can place a heavy burden on society. Therefore, as of March 15, the Ministry began distributing leaflets and press information to the public about worrisome symptoms and eliminating mosquito breeding places. Tourists are informed via CHATA and CAP (airport). It was also announced that a press conference on dengue fever will be held next Monday.

Doctors and other medical professionals have received information from the ministry including an update on the symptoms and spread of the disease. The department hopes to obtain more accurate information on dengue cases through its department and laboratory, as well as from the CMC.
