Women protested against the sexual violence they were subjected to on a daily basis. Five million women in the country experienced sexual violence in the second half of last year alone, according to an independent Mexican research firm. The femicide rate in Mexico increased by 130% between 2015 and 2020.

The protesters ’anger mainly focused on President Lopez Obrador. It will not do much against the offense. The President recently expressed support for a politician who had been accused by a number of women of rape.

Names of the victims

A large group of protesters gathered at the presidential palace in Mexico City and drew hundreds of the names of the raped women on a metal fence around the building. The fence was put in place to protect the historic palace from the protesters.

Among the demonstrators was a woman whose 12-year-old daughter was recently raped. The suspect, a 45-year-old man, will likely be released soon due to lack of evidence. “I am here to speak in defense of justice. Yesterday she was my daughter, and tomorrow she might be a different girl,” the woman told Reuters news agency.

Demonstrations were also held elsewhere in Mexico on International Women’s Day, but as far as I know no one was injured there. Protests in Mexico have been less intense this year than in previous years, possibly due to the Corona pandemic.
