Sevilla have found a successor to coach Jose Luis Mendilibar, who was sacked last week. He is 48-year-old Diego Alonso, who was still active as national coach for his country Uruguay until last year’s World Cup.
For Alonso, this is his first coaching job in Europe. As a footballer in Spain, he played for Valencia and Atletico Madrid, among others, and played eight international matches. He previously worked as a coach for clubs in Uruguay, Mexico and Inter Miami. In December 2021, he was appointed his country’s national coach. He managed to qualify for the World Cup with Uruguay, but failed in the group stage in Qatar.
Mendilibar’s dismissal came after Sunday’s draw against PSV Eindhoven (2-2, Champions League) and Rayo Vallecano (2-2, Spanish League). Sevilla ranks fourteenth in the Spanish League. Alonso signed a contract until the end of the season.
Filippo Inzaghi
Salernitana appoints Filippo Inzaghi as coach of the team. The eldest of the Inzaghi brothers succeeds Paulo Souza, who was sacked on Tuesday. He was responsible for the poor start in Serie A. Salernitana has yet to win and is just below Cagliari in the world rankings.
“Pippo” Inzaghi was active as a footballer in three World Cup finals and played 57 international matches. He began his work as a coach at Milan in 2014, where he worked for one season. He later rose to the second division with Venezia, then to the first division with Benevento, and last season he was a coach in the second level in Reggina. His brother Simone Inzaghi is the current coach of Internazionale.
His first game off the bench for Salernitana after the international break was against Cagliari.
