United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres arrived at the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and the Gaza Strip. The UN Secretary-General wants a “moderate” number to cross the border with Gaza as quickly as possible. US President Joe Biden spoke earlier this week about twenty trucks, but according to the United Nations at least a hundred trucks are needed per day to meet Gaza’s needs.

“We are actively working with all parties to ensure that obstacles to the delivery of aid are removed,” the UN Secretary-General said. “We have two million people here who are suffering badly. There is no water, no food, no medicine, no fuel. Gaza needs everything to survive.”

One important obstacle is that Israel wants to check whether any unauthorized goods enter Gaza through the border crossing. That is why there must be controls, but it is not clear who will do this and how stringent those controls will be. Guterres calls for “practical and rapid” checks

In addition, Guterres emphasized that there should be enough fuel on the Gazan side of the border to distribute aid throughout the Gaza Strip. The Israeli government said earlier that it would allow the provision of water, food and medicine, but did not mention fuel.
