The Van Poppel boy will not touch his bike in the coming weeks. The 36-year-old Dutchman suffered a broken rib and several thoracic vertebrae during a fall in Nokere Koerse. The employer, Intermarché-Wanti, reported this on social media.

“Medical tests have shown that the boy, Van Poppel, suffered severe fractures in his crash in Knockery. He will now take a six-week break. We wish you a speedy recovery, boy!” “We will miss you,” says X.

Van Poppel's car crashed badly last Wednesday in the final kilometer of Nokere Koerse. Pascal Ackermann took off in the lead-up to the sprint, almost causing Tim Merlier to fall. In the end, the latter stayed upright and raced to victory on Nokereberg, but Jonas Ricart was less fortunate.

The enemy pilot Alpecin-Deceuninck crashed hard at high speed and unwittingly took several passengers with him. Intermarché-Wanty in particular was damaged, because the entire racing train with leader Gerben Thijssen, Boy van Poppel and Madis Mihkels was destroyed. Thijssen and Mihkels escaped unscathed, so the damage to Van Poppel turned out to be much greater.

Van Poppel – who will not race for the foreseeable future – has provisionally completed 17 racing days this season. He started the year with the Tour of Valencia and then rode the UAE Tour and several one-day races in Belgium, including the Nokere Koerse.
