Because of Corona, Joris (59) needs two new lungs, but he is too old for a transplant: “unfair” – Wel.nl

Joris Dikkonink, 59, from Anzigm, Flanders, contracted the Coronavirus in December. He has been in a coma since December 20. Juris can only wake up when he gets new lungs, but as a Corona patient he is very old, Het Laatste Nieuws writes.

Soon after he was injured, Joris had only mild complaints. Nothing seems to happen. Until suddenly his condition seriously deteriorated. The level of oxygen in his blood decreased and he had to be put on a ventilator. The man in good health without being overweight managed to conquer the virus, but he is still in a coma.

His lungs were severely affected, on the one hand due to the corona and on the other hand due to the prolonged ventilation. He cannot wake up with these lungs … “, says his daughter Florence.

However, her father is not eligible for a lung transplant. “He is 59 years old. You usually qualify for two new lungs until your 65th birthday, but it appears that this is the 50-year limit for Covid patients. And that’s how it ended for Dad.”

His family is angry about it. Even before Corona, this was a very lively and healthy person. [..] All the other members are fine. Only his lungs no longer wanted to come. it’s not fair…”
