Austria beat USA, Portugal and Switzerland

On Friday afternoon, the next 12 group matches for the World Cup of Darts were scheduled in Frankfurt. Read which countries won here.

The nations that lost the opening game on Thursday evening were back in action on Friday afternoon. All of them met a country that had not yet started the tournament. The four seeded nations lost their first game and had to work hard to keep their chances of qualifying for the last 16 alive.

Host countries are retaliating
Of the four seeded nations in action yesterday afternoon, Spain, Northern Ireland and Austria managed to win. Spain, along with Jose Justicia and Tony Martinez, had a slim chance of winning the group with a 4-2 win over debutants Iceland. The same thing happened to Brendan Dolan and Daryl Gurney (Northern Ireland) also won their second match against a debutant nation, beating Ukraine 4–0 to finish with an average of 96.97.

Van Dongen and Gates lost
People were looking forward to the 10th-ranked match between Austria and USA featuring Jules van Dongen and Leonard Gates. Austria Thursday evening’s 4-2 loss to Denmark left work to be done. After trailing 2-0, the American came back well to make it 3-2 and get two arrows for 3-3. These were missed, so Suljovic sealed victory for Austria with a double 4.

Shutdowns
Switzerland
Disappointed again. Sweden also lost 4-1 against Italy, losing 4-3. Sweden and Italy meet tonight, with the winner advancing to the last 16. Also Jose de Sousa (Portugal) can return home. He lost the second match with his partner Luiz Ameixa, who were too strong for Lithuania 4–1. Croatia, along with Boris Krcmar, crawled through the eye of the needle in the first game of the tournament. They fell 3-2 against Thailand and had two match darts, but the last two legs went to the Eastern European nation.
