The 26-year-old Hartono reached the main tournament in Melbourne last year. She lost to American Amanda Anisimova in the first round. In this year’s edition, Hartono addressed it Against the American Shelby Rogers.
In the qualifiers, she started on Monday by defeating (6-4, 6-4) the Swiss Jelena N. Albon, after which she was very strong against the Australian Distan Ayava in the second round: 3-6, 6-3 7-6 (6). Against Pigossi, she lost her serve twice in the first set, while using one break point.
Hartono played very sloppy with 21 unforced errors, but then recovered to qualify for his second major tournament in singles after winning in two sets. Last year she reached the second round at Wimbledon in doubles with Demi Shores.
Hartono is the only Dutch tennis star to advance from the qualifiers to the main tournament. Arantxa Rus, Suzan Lamens and Eva Vedder all failed to do so. Tim Van Reythofen and Jess Brewer are stranded with the guys. On their order Botic van de Zandschulp and Tallon Fransespoor were placed directly.
Wesley Kollhoff and Jean-Julien Roger are in the doubles semi-finals at the Adelaide ATP Championships. Koolhoff and his British partner Neil Skupsky were too strong for the Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and the Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vaselin: 6-7 (7) 7-6 (5) 10-6.
Roger won with his partner Marcelo Arevalo from El Salvador against the Colombian duo Juan Sebastian Cabal / Robert Farah: 6-1 6-7 (4) 10-4. Koolhoff and Roger avoid each other in the semifinals.
