The Belgian operator Kinepolis also received a fraction of the normal number of visitors in the first quarter of 2021. Due to the closure measures to prevent infection with the Coronavirus, most cinemas have been closed in the past period. This was the case throughout the quarter in the Netherlands and Belgium, among other countries.
In total, Kinepolis welcomed 400,000 visitors in the last period. This is 95 percent less year-on-year. The cinema chain got a new loan of 80 million euros to get through the difficult period.
In cinemas that were open, as in the United States and Spain, up to 30 percent of attendees were attracted in the pre-pandemic phase. The company calls this “encouraging due to the lack of content and strict security measures”. Include Godzilla vs. Kong, Tom and Jerry were famous. CEO Eddie Duquin notes that US film studios continue to delay the premiere of their most important films until more cinemas open around the world.
In March, the company opened a large movie theater in Leidschendamm, with eleven screens. Kinepolis expects to be able to receive half a million visitors annually there under normal conditions. At the moment, according to the Dutch government, there is no justification for reopening cinemas and theaters. The new cinema at Leidschendam is part of Westfield Mall of the Netherlands, a project of the Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield real estate company.
