Athlete Sydney McLaughlin-Levron will miss the World Athletics Championships in Budapest from August 19. The American world and Olympic champion in the 400-meter hurdles announces that she has a knee injury.
McLaughlin-Levron will compete in the Hungarian capital over the 400m, not the 400m hurdles. She won the American 400m title earlier this year with a time of 48.74m. This is the best time of the season.
For the Netherlands, Lake Claver is competing in the 400m at the World Cup. Fimk Paul, McLaughlin’s competitor in the 400m hurdles, will compete in the World Cup with that number.
“I am saddened to inform you of the necessity to withdraw from this year’s World Cup in Budapest,” McLaughlin said. “After consulting with my doctors and coaches, I need to focus on a minor knee injury so I can get fully fit for the Paris Olympics next year. I look forward to seeing everyone back on track soon.”
McLaughlin won gold in the 400m hurdles at the 2021 Tokyo Games. Last year she defeated Eugene Paul at the World Championships in the US with a world record of 50.68.
This year she had not yet run a head-to-head against the Dutch in the 400m hurdles. It would have happened at Memorial Van Damme in Brussels on September 8, but that chance is slim after the American’s injury.
