Dutch water polo players qualified for the World Cup quarter-finals in Hungary on Sunday. National coach Evangelos Dodisis’ side settled with Canada in the so-called middle round: 10-7.
Both teams kept each other on balance for a long time, but Canada had no answer for a strong third quarter from the Netherlands. During that time, the Netherlands advanced at 8-3, still being halfway 3-3. 17-year-old Lola Mulhousen showed himself at this point with a beautiful ball.
The North American team went back to 9-7, but the 2008 Olympic champion didn’t see the victory in jeopardy, also because Canada bumped into the post and crossbar and goalkeeper Laura Artes excellently tackled several times.
Shortly before the World Cup, Canada was still opposed to the orange during the so-called farewell match. Then they won 14-12 in Utrecht. The two countries met at the Tokyo Olympics last year. Until then, the Netherlands, who were trailing 2-1 in Budapest after the first quarter, won. Bente Rouge scored two Canadian goals. Sabrina van der Sloot and Vivian Sevinich scored in the second quarter, as Canada Arts overtook once.
Canada increases pressure in the final stage
Then things went quickly with five Dutch goals in a row: van Mulhouseen (2), Kitty Justra, Rogge and Simon van de Krats. Between two Canadian hits, Maxine Schaap was also accurate once. Canada ramped up pressure in the last quarter. Arts often had to step in, but he stayed with two goals against them, after which Van der Sloot scored again in the final stage.
Because of the second place in Group B, the Netherlands was sentenced to play an intermediate round.
On Tuesday, Greece is the opponent in the battle for a place in the top four. The coach of the national team Dodis will meet with his compatriots in Budapest. He succeeded Greece’s Arno Havinga after the Olympics in Tokyo last year, having been his assistant for several years.
