Within the Paramaribo Urban Rehabilitation Program (PURP) a presentation was given on Friday by ILACO NV. The Directorate of Culture has engaged the engineering firm ILACO NV of Suriname to develop a strategy for regulating a parking policy in the historic center of Paramaribo.
This activity is part of PURP’s activities to “bring life back” to our historic city centre. Friday’s presentation was the first meeting with stakeholders, specifically representatives from the public and private sectors in Suriname. Several meetings will follow, and the advisory document is scheduled to be completed by the end of July this year.
Natasja Deol, PURP Program Coordinator, emphasized the importance and involvement of stakeholders in implementing a successful parking policy. Attendees from both the public and private sectors indicated their desire to increase cooperation and that they wanted to participate in implementation at an early stage.
Many questions also focused on the research itself, which was conducted through surveys, interviews, and a review of previous studies. All the information collected indicates that parking should be organized in the city center, but not without addressing all additional factors.
