The baseball world is in a state of shock following the death of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez in a boating accident in the early hours or Sunday morning.

The 24-year-old, born in Cuba, was the National League Rookie of the Year in 2013, and earned All-Star selection in 2013 and ’16.

Tragically, he had announced only days earlier that his girlfriedn, Carla Mendoza, was pregnant with the couple’s first child.

The Marlins cancelled their game against the Atlanta Braves the day news of Hernandez’s death broke, while teams around the MLB circuit – and the Miami Dolphins NFL game against the Cleveland Browns – all paid tribute to popular pitcher.

Major League Baseball also put together this touching tribute:

The Marlins also announced they would be retired his uniform number, #16, while all players wore his jersey for the final time in Monday’s game against the New York Mets, which included an emotional lead-off homer from Miami’s Dee Brown – his first of the season.
