Scientists had been looking forward to it for seven years, and on Sunday that day came. The OSIRIS-REx spacecraft has delivered its package containing approximately 250 grams of dust and debris from the Bennu space rock to Earth. Why all this effort for such a small amount of material?

Bennu is volgens wetenschappers een overblijfsel uit de tijd dat ons zonnestelsel ontstond. Dat is ruim 4,5 miljard jaar geleden. Veel materiaal in de ruimte klonterde toen samen. Daaruit ontstonden bijvoorbeeld onze zon en de planeten die er nu omheen draaien.
Omdat Bennu niet is samengeklonterd met de zon of een planeet, kan de ruimterots ons veel vertellen over het ontstaan van de aarde en ons zonnestelsel. Het is volgens wetenschappers een perfect bewaard gebleven tijdscapsule.

After the package arrived in the American desert last Sunday, it had to be picked up as quickly as possible. NASA wanted to prevent contamination of the capsule’s contents with terrestrial materials or bacteria.
The capsule is opened and examined very carefully
In the coming weeks, the capsule will be carefully opened in a so-called cleanroom. This is a space completely free of dust and bacteria.
Scientists then examine even the smallest dust particles in the capsule. This will likely provide us with a lot of new knowledge about space, our solar system, and Earth’s origins.
OSIRIS-REx continued its space journey on Sunday after delivering the package. The spacecraft is now heading towards Apophis, another asteroid. It will arrive near Earth in April 2029. There, too, the spacecraft must drill through the surface and reveal the composition.
