This photo clearly shows the damage to the large building of the Weng Hu Super Shopping Center in Suriname. A fire broke out at the company located in the Indira Gandhiweg area, adjacent to the Komisarisweg area, on Sunday morning, March 10.
According to fire information officer, Olten Penas, who went to the scene, the fire broke out in the warehouse. The fire was discovered by an employee who immediately raised the alarm.
When the owner inspected the warehouse, the fire had spread to the clothing store and the entire building was engulfed in flames.
The Surinamese fire brigade and police arrived at the scene very quickly. Indira Gandhiweg and Commissariweg were partially closed so that the fire brigade could carry out firefighting work without disturbance.
There were no personal incidents.
It is not yet clear whether vehicles coming from the auto center adjacent to the burned storefront were damaged by the intense fire (video). The building is insured against fire but its contents are not. It was also connected to the electricity grid.
At the time of writing this article, the fire brigade was still working to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is not yet clear. De Nieuwe Grond police are investigating the case.
