The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization behind the Golden Globes, is calling for the withdrawal. The assets, rights and property of the foundation behind the American Film and Television Awards have been purchased by private investors.
The new owners said the new Golden Globes Foundation would continue the work of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and “plan, organize, and produce the annual Golden Globe Awards.” HFPA will eventually go away. It is not yet clear what exactly that means for the global film journalists who vote for the awards.
The Golden Globes, founded in 1943, has been criticized for years for, among other things, a lack of diversity. The HFPA announced last year that 52 percent of the now 90 members are women and 51.5 percent are “racially and ethnically diverse.”
