The lottery determines where Wimpanyama will play
Fourteen ping pong balls will be decided on the night from Tuesday to Wednesday (from 02:00 Dutch time) which team Wimbanyama plays from next season. The winner of the so-called NBA Draft lottery will be the first to be picked next month in the NBA Draft, the annual event in which clubs take turns signing new players.
He had been 100 per cent certain for months now that Wimpanyama would be the first choice. Since only the fourteen worst clubs of the current season are allowed to participate in the lottery, the Frenchman will probably end up with a mediocre squad.
“But if you get drafted first, you can be expected to immediately take the whole organization to a higher level. And you can lead your team to a championship in about five years,” says Elson.

NBA Draft Lottery
- De NBA geeft de slechtste clubs van het seizoen altijd de kans om als eerste de jonge spelers voor het volgende seizoen te kiezen.
- Een loterij bepaalt welke club de eerste keuze krijgt in de Draft.
- De drie slechtste clubs van vorig seizoen (Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets en San Antonio Spurs) hebben allemaal evenveel kans op de eerste keuze: 14 procent.
- Voor de elf andere clubs die mee mogen doen aan de loterij neemt de kans op de eerste keuze steeds een beetje af, afhankelijk van hun prestaties in het huidige seizoen.
- Charlotte Hornets heeft 12,5 procent kans op de eerste keuze. De rij wordt gesloten door New Orleans Pelicans, met 0,5 procent kans.
- De NBA Draft Lottery is in de nacht van dinsdag op woensdag om 2.00 uur Nederlandse tijd.
- De NBA Draft is pas na het seizoen, op donderdag 22 juni. Dan zal Victor Wembanyama (net als de rest van de wereld) officieel horen voor welke club hij de komende jaren gaat spelen.
