Several shots were fired at the house of the Surinamese Minister of Health outside
The home of Surinamese Health Minister, Ammar Ramadan, came under fire on Tuesday evening (local time). No one is hurt. The Government takes into account the possibility of a targeted attack.
A government guard said a man on a bicycle fired at least nine shots and then fled. There is no trace of the suspect.
Five bullets hit Ramadan's balcony. There was also a bullet impact from a vehicle on the property. Police found nine shell casings. Ramadan responded to the incident on ABC Radio Suriname: “Fortunately, no one was injured, everyone is fine.” “It is of course dangerous and they did not hesitate to shoot into the house.”
The Suriname government strongly rejects the attack and considers it a “serious attack on the functioning of the rule of law and governance.” Security forces were instructed to immediately reinforce security measures.
The motive behind the shooting is not yet clear. The government is seriously considering the possibility of launching a targeted attack on the administration, “especially on Minister Aman Ramadan's speech.”
“In my opinion, we should not take this matter lightly,” Ramadan said. The minister says he has no idea what angle the bombing could come from. The minister is a member of President Chan Santokhi's party. Before becoming a minister in 2020, he worked as a general practitioner. The police are investigating the case, but have not yet been able to provide any additional information.
