In the exciting third set, the world number 6 seed used only her sixth match point. She had squandered two match points in the third set at 6-5 on Van Uytvanck’s serve and three more straight points in the tiebreak. Over two hours later she finished the match with a fine serve, followed by a winner with a powerful forehand. The Belgian asked for another ‘challenge’, but the photos showed that the ball had clearly fallen within the lines.
In the previous round, Van Uytvanck was still responsible for the elimination of compatriot Elise Mertens.
Sabalenka, 24, will compete in the last four on Saturday against either American Shelby Rogers or Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens, who will end her career after Wimbledon.
Once again, Koelhoff is getting too strong on Van de Zandschulp
Wesley Koolhof once again beat Botic van de Zandschulp in the doubles event at the turf tournament in Rosmalen. Along with his regular partner Neil Skopsky, Koelhoff was too strong for Van de Zandschulp and American Mackenzie MacDonald with a 6-7 (4), 6-2, 14-12.
In the tiebreak in the thrilling match, Kolehof and Briton Skopsky, the world number one ranked based on 2022, only used his sixth match point.
Last month, Koelhoff and co-owner at Roland Garros were too strong for Van de Zandschulp, who then formed a pair with Talon Groenebauer.
On Saturday, Kolhoff and Skopsky will compete in the semi-finals against Mattoi Middelkoop and Robin Haas, who both benefited from Brandon Nakashima of the United States and Finland’s Emil Rossovoori.
