According to foreign editor Michal van der Toorn, reports have emerged in recent days that Russia has made territorial gains in the region, although seizing the village would not change much on the front line. “It's really just a very small part of the map now, and in fact there's been a stalemate for months,” says van der Toorn. “So it doesn't really matter, but it's an extra village.”

Bad News

This is not the only bad news Ukraine received today. Additional military support from Europe also appears to be delayed, although German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius today announced a new aid package for Ukraine.

Van der Toorn: “It is a package worth 500 million euros. It contains ten thousand German army grenades, a hundred armored infantry vehicles and a hundred transport vehicles. But there are no Taurus missiles.

Painful topic

Van der Toorn knows that non-delivery of these weapons systems is precisely a sore subject in German politics. Schulz had previously said a very clear “no”, but there was hope among some – including in Ukraine – that Germany would agree after all under pressure from the Americans. But this turned out not to be the case.
