Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency will monitor the three nuclear power plants owned by Ukraine. This is what the CEO of the Ukrainian nuclear energy company Energoatam told the Ukrainian media. These are the Rivne, Khmelnytsky and Yuzhnooekrainsk power plants.
“Inspectors will be everywhere and look at the security situation,” said CEO Petro Cotten. He adds that the presence of IAEA inspectors is also important to know the risks that might arise if Russia tries to take control of the plants.
Russian forces have been in control of another Ukrainian nuclear power plant near the city of Zaporizhzhya for some time. Energoatom expects the Russians to leave there next week after which the nuclear agency will also move to that station. “After that, we will be able to guarantee the safety of this station and the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Agency,” Cotten said.
Earlier today, the nuclear agency said it supported sending an International Atomic Energy Agency mission to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which exploded in 1986. The Russians had been in control of the area for several weeks, but they left. Ukraine reported today that Russian forces were seen in the vicinity of the factory.
