Pig kidney continues to function in brain dead man’s carcass | Sciences
Possible solution to the member shortage
It is not yet clear whether a live person fully reacts to a pig kidney transplant. However, the breakthrough may be good news for people waiting for a transplant. The average waiting time for a kidney transplant in the Netherlands is now 2.6 years. People die every year while waiting to get an organ.
The experiment is being conducted on a 57-year-old American man who died suddenly of brain cancer. His family donated his body to science in hopes that pig kidneys would reduce organ shortages in the future.
